Shuki Levy (Hebrew:שוקי לוי; born June 3, 1947) is an Israeli-born American music composer, television writer, director, and executive producer. Levy's best known work is soundtrack compositions for children's television programs of the 1980s.
An award-winning composer, songwriter, recording and performing artist, Shuki Levy has garnered 15 gold and platinum records with sales in excess of 14 million records worldwide. He has scored over a dozen feature and television films; composed the music for over 130 television shows; and produced, written and directed multiple film and television projects.
Levy composed additional music for the French dub of Bomber X, along with Haim Saban. As a composer team, they are notable as being the composers for many television shows of the 1980's, such as Inspector Gadget, He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Eagle Riders, She-Ra: Princess of Power and Dragon Ball Z.
In the 1990s, he became known chiefly for his work on the Power Rangers franchise.
Born in Mandatory Palestine, Levy began his career as a singer and music performer in various clubs around Tel Aviv. A self-taught musician, Shuki mastered the guitar by the age of 14 and founded one of Israel's first rock groups. He also appeared in the musical Hair.
In 1975, Shuki partnered with Israeli actress Aviva Paz and started a pop group called Shuki and Aviva. The group became well-known throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Together with Aviva Paz he scored a hit single throughout Europe called "Signorina - Concertina" which sold two million copies. Shuki left the group at the height of its popularity to pursue a composing career in the United States.
Levy and then-partner Haim Saban founded Saban Entertainment, a production company responsible for 1990s-era series Masked Rider, VR Troopers, Big Bad Beetleborgs, and the Power Rangers franchise. The company was sold to The Walt Disney Company by the end of the decade.
Alhough Shuki has found international success as a composer and producer, his connection to Israel has remained strong. In 2007 he opened a state-of-the-art museum at the desert fortress Masada, giving a home to the numerous historical treasures found there. Shuki composed a dramatic stage musical called Imagine This which premiered at the New London Theater in London's West End on November 19, 2008.
