The Mysterious Ship, Skull (謎の帆船ドクロ号! nazo no hansen dokuro gō!) is the fifth episode of Star Fleet. It aired on November 8, 1980 on Fuji TV in Japan, and November 20, 1982 on ITV in the UK.

Plot SummaryEdit

XBomberCrewpatch Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow.

The X-Bomber lands at Pluto Base with the transport fleet; Dr. Benn congratulates the boys on a job well done. After the ship lands, Shiro, Hercules and Lee set out to search for their former academy tutor Captain Carter in a snow mobile and then by foot.

Lee and Hercules are certain that Carter is dead, a short flashback of the attack on Pluto Base follows. Shiro however refuses to accept that and is convinced he is still alive. A Flashback to Shiro being taught under Carter during his days at the academy follows.

Shiro is unable to shoot his ray gun on the target, Carter chides Shiro about his poor marksmanship. He tells Shiro to shoot him in the heart of his bulletproof jacket. Shiro is reluctant, but is roused to do so by Carter, who calls him a coward unworthy of being part of the academy. Shiro shoots Carter, who comes up to him and congratulates him on proving he can aim and shoot at the same time. Further training montages come up, and the flashbacks ends with Carter telling Shiro "Always trust your instincts".

Meanwhile back on X-Bomber, Lamia is contacted by someone calling themselves as 'the Skull', asking for his 'compatriot' with the pendant; meaning Lamia. Lamia launches X-Bomber's shuttle craft and departs. On discovering her departure, Shiro, Hercules and Lee take the separate Dai-X fighters out to search for her.

Lamia shuts off communication with her friends and then spots the Skull, a giant flying sailing ship in space. However Lamia's engine fails and she is stranded. Shiro in Braincom catches up. Shiro refuses to allow Lamia to contact the Skull, fearing it could be an Alliance trick. Hercules and Lee catch up. The three try to plead for Lamia to return, but their argument is interrupted by the appearance of the Imperial Battlecruiser.

Makara realizes the Skulls presence makes Lamia F-01 for sure - so she orders Orion to head out to destroy the Skull. Lamia is distraught over the attack on the Skull, but the boys don't assist at Dr. Benn's orders. The Skull returns fire and takes out a few astrofighters and Makara takes over the attack from Orion. As the pilots are surprised to see the Imperial Alliance Retreat, Makara opens up fire with laser torpedoes, heavily damaging the Skull.

X-Bomber returns and the Dai-X fighters grapple onto Lamia's shuttle craft. Makara ignores the arrival of the X-Bomber, assuming they won't interfere.

The boys are able to persuade Dr. Benn to get involved in the fight. Neck lasers open up on Makara from behind as she pursues the Skull. Makara orders a retreat, as she does so, she returns fire on X-Bomber. The two ships have a near miss as the Cruiser retreats straight toward X-Bomber. Lamia is tearfully upset that she was unable to make contact with the Skull, hoping it would explain some of the mysteries of her history.
